Artist Spotlight: Mickey Factz
Mickey Factz aka Mickey Williams Jr. is currently one of my favorite up and coming artists. The first piece of work I heard from Factz was his Heaven's Fallout mixtape. I remember the first time I heard it, I was at work assembling these weird desks, turned on the iPod and I was hooked. In all honesty, my desire to branch out and listen to more genres of music all started from when I heard Heaven's Fallout and I thought to myself, "all of this is hip hop." I mean, Factz was rapping over stuff no other rapper would even think twice to try to rap over AND he was killing it. Hell, the dude rapped over the Geico commercial jingle. Right now, Mickey Factz is working on a joint mixtape with Cory Gunz and he is also working on his album, The Achievement due out sometime next year. Until that comes out, here are all of Mickey Factz official mixtapes (minus Flashback Vol. 1). I've also uploaded individual tracks for you to sample and download from each mixtape.

Kanye West - Runaway (Short Film)
The 35 minute short film dedicated to Runaway is here. This video contains several tracks from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and from what I've heard, I can't wait to buy the album. 35 minutes is a lot of time, but you'll feel like it's all worth it when you hear Lost In The World. The ballet performance to Runaway was pretty sick too.

This would be a dream come true if it wasn't for the fact that Swizz Beatz produced this. Nonetheless, Kanye, Lupe, Mos, and Big Sean all do a great job on this collaboration.

Kendrick Lamar - Kendrick Lamar (FreEP)
This is the FreEP from Kendrick Lamar. Born and raised in Compton, Kendrick Lamar isn't your usual Compton MC. Not only does he have some substance, he also has a flow and style that totally embodies and reflects the golden era of hip hop that inspired him. "She Needs Me" is hands down my favorite track on this EP. If you only listen to one song, let it be that, you won't regret it; It's the type of track that when you hear it you say "that's hip hop."Lamar recently released a mixtape titled "OD" so keep an eye out for it here. After I give it a solid listen, I'll see if it's worth posting.

Artist Spotlight: Mayer Hawthorne
Born and raised in Michigan, Andrew Cohen, better known as Mayer Hawthorne (Hawthorne was the road he lived on as a kid), describes his style of music as,"Green-Eyed Soul". Not only does he sing, but he also writes and produces his music. After moving to L.A. to pursue a music career, Hawthorne was eventually signed by the beloved Stone Throw Records label. It was there that he released his debut single, "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out"/"When I Said Goodbye", on a red heart-shaped 7" record in 2008. 2009 saw the release of his 1st LP, "A Strange Arrangement". Here are videos and other tracks as well that are not only just delightful (yea, I said "delightful") but also conjure up a bit of nostalgia from soul music's yesteryears. Also, I've included his remix to Snoop Dogg's - Gangsta Luv.
XV - Everybody's Nobody (Mixtape)
Hailing from Witchita, KS, XV isn't exactly new to the scene. Vizzy dropped "Complex" back in 07 and has since had trouble getting any real attention. Over the past year and several mixtapes, it seems as though he was finally getting some love. Then, in July, XV finally inked a deal with Warner Bros. Everybody's Nobody isn't new by any means, having been released in 2009, but it serves as a great mixtape to introduce XV to new fans. Features include, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Colin Munroe, and others. Enjoy.
