Chiddy and Xaphoon are at it again. The duo's 3rd release showcases Chiddy Bang doing what they do best; Xaphoon sampling indie music, and Chiddy flowing flawlessly over everything. Dope music and a nice addition to their catalog.
This is the first video from their latest album, EGO, which was featured in the first issue of The Walkman Chronicles. EGO is available now via FOD's BandCamp.
After only finding out about her last night, Toronto R&B songstress Rochelle Jordan, gives us another track to add to our iPod's. Definitely has the 90's vibe. This track and "How To Feel" were produced by her in-house producer, Klash.
I always said Canada doesn't get enough credit for it's music scene. Now we can add Rochelle Jordan to the impressive list of Hip Hop/RnB artists that have come out of Toronto. "How To Feel" is a great track that blends RnB with Chillwave making for an awesome song. I'm really looking forward to hearing more from her.
I haven't heard something I didn't like from Lyrics Born (or Sam Sparro for that matter). This is off is 2010 release, As U Were, available now in stores and on iTunes.
Florida emcee QuESt drops a new track off of his upcoming How Thoughtful 2 project. If you haven't checked out his January release, The Reason: A Defense Mechacnism, do it now. Produced by A.I (ICE).
I don't know much about the London band, Pushing Hands. I searched the internet for more from them but this is all I could come up with. Just an amazing song and a pretty cool video. Hopefully we hear more about these guys soon.
Yes, another track titled "Rolling Stone". Thankfully, all 3 songs on this site with that title, sound nothing alike. Here's the 1st single from Kenton's upcoming album, Chaos Music. No release date yet.
After spoiling us with a free mixtape just a week ago, the Kidz bless us with another track off of their upcoming Occasion EP, which should drop sometime this summer. I only played it once and it's already stuck in my head.
New video for Kendrick Lamar's single, HiiiPower produced by J. Cole. HiiiPower is off of Lamar's upcoming Section.80 project. Purchase the single now on iTunes.
Former members of The Procussions, Madeiros and Stro are the only members continuing to work together after the group disbanded. This track is off of Madeiros' upcoming Saudade album, dropping 6/14/11 via his BandCamp.
Chiddy and Xaphoon do their thing over a track from one of my favorite groups, The Knocks. This track will be on their upcoming Peanut Butter & Swelly mixtape, dropping 5/27/11.
Cole dropped this earlier via his DreamVillian site. Dope track and I'm especially digging the sample. If I'm not mistaken, it samples the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Runaway" which also happens to be the same one that Laws used for "Runaway".
Ever since I got this new job I've been buying a ton of cd's via Amazon or Zia Records (or from artist's sites). I get paid every week and after I get my check I head to Zia and throughout the week I just order them off Amazon. I thought I'd start sharing my purchases with this segment. As most of you know, the title is a reference to the High Fidelity film. I thought it was appropriate because I want this segment to embody the same pretentiousness that the record store embodied in High Fidelity. I'll try to post 1 music video from each album I post along with a link to Amazon (or the artists' site) to purchase the album.
The Foreign Exchange - Connected (Re-Issue)
Genre: Hip Hop/R&B/Soul
Release Date: 4/24/07 (Re-issue release date 5/17/11)
Philadelphia artist Work Drugs is currently hosting a remix contest (click here for more info) for his track "Rad Racer". Swedish producer Summer Heart has done an excellent job of adding to an already impressive track resulting in the perfect summer song. I've also included the original track for you to compare the remix to. While the remix is free, the original is available for purchase.
After stumbling upon that Only Children track, I happened to stumble upon more music from Def Sound. I fell in love with this track and even bought the mp3 (which is something I'm not a fan of doing unless it comes with a cd). I watched this video 3 consecutive times because I loved this song so much. You can purchase the mp3 on Def Sound's BandCamp page. Produced by RC and it samples The Bird & The Bee.
The duo Only Children (comprised of ∂eÆ’S❍und + NiKK❍ GR▲Y) released the 1st track of their weekly segment. According to their site, they have a collection of songs that fit a genre they call "trillwave" and plan on releasing one song per week for 10 weeks. Visuals for Everything.Goes.OUR.Way are on the way.
Noah "40" samples Jai Pauls "BTSU" to give Drake a track to tell his story over. As of right now, this track isn't off of any upcoming projects. Weird, prior to today, I didn't have one Drake post and now there is two.
I don't know too much about Cobe but I really liked what he was saying on this track. Produced by Coast Production. "Times Change" is off of his upcoming Song Of The Starz 2: Dark Knight mixtape.
Sene links up with Swedish producer NoGames to bring us Metropolispeaker (FreEP). It was just released yesterday seemingly out of nowhere. I'm not complaining, it's quality music.
The classic 2007 debut album from Blu & Exile go the re-issue treatment and is currently available through UGHH. Original copies of this sell for $130 on Ebay so take advantage of this $15.97 price tag. Supplies are limited so order one now. Honestly, Below The Heaven's was the Best Album of the 2000's. That means it's better than The Blueprint, better than Stillmatic, and better than all of Kanye's albums. Click the link below to purchase your copy.
The 1st single off of Laws' upcoming project, Yesterday's Future mixtape. Yesterday's Future is Laws' "virtual collaboration" with Paul McCartney. Production is handled by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. If this is just a taste of things to come, we won't be disappointed when Yesterday's Future drops on 5/24/11.
Mike Posner remixes the Coldplay classic, "The Scientist" and turns it into yet another quality remix. If all Mike Posner did was remix songs we already love, we wouldn't have to worry about hearing any that Bow Chicka Wow Wow nonsense. Go ahead, think about it. Think how different life would be if you never heard that song... Now snap back to reality and listen to "The Scientist".
Brooklyn emcee, ScienZe drops his Simply Aesthetic FreEP with the help of Blu, Sene, Clint Partie, Ayomari, D. Julien, and others. A short and sweet release that runs about 26 minutes. Exactly how an EP should be.
Two of the more promising up and comers collaborate over some Don Cannon production. Forte' is really stepping it up as of late and it's nice to see that his hard work his garnering him more and more attention.
As I've said before, TOTR is not just a hip hop site; it's an indie site (that just so happens to post a lot of hip hop). Here is track off of Best Coast's debut LP, Crazy For You, which was released in 2010.
Well, well, well, if "Sly Fox" isn't at it again. Fox News is no stranger to bashing hip hop and this time, they're latest target is beloved Chicago emcee, Common. Because when you think of Common you think, "Oh yeah, that's a controversial rapper." All of the fuss is being caused by Michelle Obama's decision to invite Common to perform during Poetry Night at the White House in front of students. Fox News even went so far as to call Common "vile". The source material that has been used against Common is his poem "A Letter To The Law" performed on Def Poetry in 2004. HipHopDX published an article on the matter which you can read at HERE.
Producer R3K brilliantly mashes up CuDi's part on Dan Black's "Symphonies" track with Florence + The Machine's "Cosmic Love". The mash up hardly sounds like a mash up and more like an original track. Well done R3K.
After reading his announcement about this yesterday, Mayer Hawthorne stayed true to his word and released his FreEP, Impressions today. I've included the artists he covered below in the tracklist with only one song I wasn't able to identify. This is a great break from all of other music coming out nowadays.
After finding out just moments ago via twitter, Mayer Hawthorne is going to release an FreEP tomorrow called, Impressions: Covers EP. On this FreEP, Hawthorne will be covering tracks like this one from Electric Light Orchestra. What's not to love about this guy? Audio below.
After months of delay, Elzhi finally blesses us with his reimagination of illmatic. Produced entirely by Will Sessions, Elmatic really does a good job of recreating the classic instead of simply mimicking it. We've waited long enough for this so stop reading and download it now. FYI: Physical copy pre-orders are available on at www.Elzhi.com.
The 5th entry (I didn't post the 4th entry on TOTR because I felt it was a miss) from Mickey Factz who has been dropping a song a day for the past 5 days. Awesome.
J. Nolan graces us with another new track which of course means, it's getting posted here. Nolan really does exactly what I want an emcee to do. Amazing that he's only 20 years old. Chaos Theory coming soon.
This is the 1st edition of a segment dedicated to spotlighting great LP/EP's found on BandCamp. Physical copies of all releases included in this segment are available for purchase. Hence the title. I'm a fan of physical copies and if an album is only available for digital download, that's usually enough to prevent me from buying it. As you know, TOTR is all about indie music and is firm believer in supporting the artist so please, don't just try to mediafire these albums. Some of these artists are even shipping you their CD's directly from their apartments. That's about as indie as it gets. FYI: I have purchased all CD's in this featured in this segment.
Awesome video. I hate 9-5's and if I worked in one long enough, I'm sure it would play out something like this. Off of Emilio's Life Without Shame (FreeLP).
The New York electropop duo of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel have released "Wait & See" as a free single from their debut, self-titled album (in stores now). The two men in the video are NOT Nick and Alex but instead, they got their dads to portray them.
In Alex's words: "for a long time Nick and I joked that our dads should take our press photos. At some point our go-to director, Ben Fries, came up with the idea of actually making a video with them playing us and “Wait and See” seemed like the perfect song to do it for. At first both Dads were a little apprehensive -- and rightfully so: My dad was appalled at the sizing options at American Apparel. But when we explained that the joke wasn’t on them -- that it was actually kind of making fun of us getting older and still living like teenagers -- they were game. For the record, they agree: We need to grow up."
It's awesome to hear Peter Gunz can still crush any beat he jumps on. The father/son duo drop a few verses on FMF's show and manage to spit hot bars for nearly 5 minutes.
Omen links up with Diggy, Ashton Travis, & Mike Jaggerr for his latest single from his upcoming Black Hero Theme Musik project. (Didn't have cover art so instead, you get this picture of Charlotte Kemp Muhl. You're welcome.)
"Poetry in the purest form over a BEP instrumental. My thoughts broken down in a symbolization regarding the things we’ve accomplished and things we have issues with. Enjoy."
The 2011 All-Freshman Team members finally drop their highly anticipated EP, Where You've Been. I had no knowledge that this would be dropping today so I was totally caught of guard. Their lyricism always impresses and their unique production backdrops serve as the perfect compliment to their lyrics. This EP features several well-known APB tracks such as Sleep, Escape, and Born To Be. No review needed, its f*cking awesome.
